As we continue to grow, we’re looking for an experienced sponsorship sales professional to help build the commercial side of our business across all three brands.

We’re looking for someone who has:

• Experience selling sponsorships, advertising or media partnerships

• Experience selling integrated newsletter and social media campaigns

• A track record of generating new business through outbound sales

• Strong relationship-building, communication and follow-up skills

• The ability to represent our brands professionally and build trust with local businesses

• A passion for helping build the next generation of local media

Experience working with industries such as real estate, luxury, healthcare, education, hospitality, retail, professional services, home services or consumer brands is a plus.

Initially, you’ll:

• Develop new sponsorship opportunities through outbound sales

• Build relationships with local and national businesses

• Present integrated sponsorship opportunities across our three newsletters and our Instagram pages

• Recommend promotion options based on each advertiser’s goals to help make their campaign successful and deliver a measurable impact on their business

• Manage the sales process from prospecting through closing

• Coordinate a smooth handoff to our editorial and content team once a partnership is confirmed

• Review campaign performance and prepare clear results reporting to support advertiser relationships, renewals and future recommendations.

• Maintain positive advertiser relationships and identify renewal opportunities

• Help grow long-term advertising and sponsorship partnerships

• Identify opportunities for advertisers to reach one neighborhood or multiple audiences across our network

• Maintain an organized pipeline and provide regular updates on outreach, opportunities and closed business

This is a flexible, part-time contractor opportunity requiring several hours per week initially, with occasional meetings in Brooklyn as needed.

Compensation

This role will begin with an introductory commission-based contractor period.

Following a successful review after 1–2 months based on sales performance, pipeline development, communication, reliability and advertiser relationship management, this role will be eligible to transition to a monthly base retainer (currently anticipated to start at approximately $500/month, depending on agreed scope and hours) plus performance-based commission.

As the business continues to grow, the role may expand into broader partnerships, commercial strategy, new sponsorship products and revenue growth.

It’s no secret that the streets of Park Slope and its surrounding neighborhoods are bustling with beloved small businesses, dotting the sidewalks as frequently as the area’s emblematic brownstones. But what about a small business designed to support…other small businesses?

That’s exactly what Shefali Lakhani, a Queens native and Prospect Heights resident, set out to do when she opened Lakhani Legal, her law firm designed to provide legal counsel to small businesses, in 2024. After working in bigger firms and feeling that the culture wasn’t a good fit for her, Lakhani pivoted to careers in financial technology and legal technology before starting her own law practice. “Entrepreneurship was always on the table…it was just a matter of what and when,” says Lakhani.

With years of experience in the legal field, she knew she had the skillset to support small businesses – a point of personal significance for Lakhani. “I grew up around [small businesses] – I come from a family of entrepreneurs, so I know what it takes to build something from the ground up, or even buy something and manage it,” she says. Outside of her own family, she also recognizes the role these businesses play in the neighborhoods they serve. “Small businesses are the lifeblood of a community, and not only do they bring diversity and different views, but they support the community in a way that maybe large corporations don’t.” In exchange, Lakhani’s firm endeavors to support them – specifically, in an area where they are often overlooked. “If you have deeper pockets, you can go to bigger, sophisticated white-shoe firms. I want to be able to provide sophisticated [legal] access…to businesses that really need it.”

Sometimes, that support looks like education. “People don’t know what they don’t know,” says Lakhani, whose approach involves breaking down complicated legalese jargon into something more digestible. She cites the trademarking process as an example of how proactive, comprehensive legal guidance can save business owners expensive trouble down the road. Lakhani’s firm also supports small businesses beyond just their nascent phase, offering strategic advising for companies looking to scale, launch new products, or garner more investments. No matter where the small business is on its journey, Lakhani relishes the ability to build relationships, meet people at the human level and learn about their origin stories and their passions. “That’s the fun and exciting part,” she says.

Unsurprisingly, Lakhani spends her Saturdays frequenting beloved local spots and exploring new neighborhoods.

MORNINGS ON THE MOVE: Lakhani starts her Saturday at Crunch Fitness on Flatbush Avenue. Following her workout, she typically pops into Hom Cafe for coffee to fuel her three-mile loop in Prospect Park.

FAMILY / BUSINESS: Before leaving the park, Lakhani often meets up with her brother, a Park Slope resident. Lakhani’s husband also joins them in the park, where he is often trying to meet new canine clients for his dog adventure business, Concrete to Creek. The group does their weekly shopping at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, picking up fresh vegetables, chicken, and “maybe some flowers, honey or bread, depending on the week,” says Lakhani.

GALLERY WALK: In the afternoon, Lakhani enjoys wandering through different neighborhoods, both close to home in Brooklyn and across the East River. A frequent stroll takes Lakhani down Park Slope’s 5th and 7th Avenues – Konoha Yakitori and Bangkok Degree are some of her eateries of choice, while Park Slope Nails is also a local favorite in the way of self-care. In Prospect Heights, she is a regular at farm.one, a space that sells fresh produce and grocery items out of its pantry, hosts events and also holds “study hall” for those looking for a workspace. “They’ve always poured back into the community,” Lakhani says. She also loves Muse Thai, where “they have a great lunch special,” Olde Brooklyn Bagel Shoppe on Vanderbilt, and The Brick Art and Gifts, which features work from local artists. When she ventures into Manhattan, she opts to visit Chelsea, the West Village, Chinatown or the Lower East Side – in any of these neighborhoods, she “loves meandering…picking up lunch and popping into a random art gallery,” she says.

DINNER AND A SHOW: Lakhani loves meeting up with her friends for dinner – “we’re always trying to try something new,” she says. They also like to follow dinner with entertainment like a comedy show or a magic show – recently, Lakhani and her crew enjoyed a magic show near Herald Square, but she’s also been interested in checking out this popular one on Court Street.

No matter where her Saturday finds her, Lakhani is someone who appreciates small businesses from every angle – as a customer, as an owner, and through the counsel she offers to others. “I’d love to meet more of the businesses and support more of the businesses in the area,” she says. “Like the small businesses that pour into communities…I too am a small business, and I want to be somebody who pours back and helps build what Prospect Heights and Park Slope are.”

Meet the team behind Zig Zag Oyster Bar, Opening July 28

Nialls Fallon, Leah Campbell, and Nick Perkins, the powerhouse trio behind Bed-Stuy’s The Fly & Hart’s as well as Cervo’s and Eel Bar in lower Manhattan, are set to open their latest venture in Prospect Heights July 28th. We chatted with Nialls about Zig Zag Oyster Bar and what the team hopes it will become for the neighborhood.

Brooklynites who are craving a getaway with no time for a weekend in the Hamptons can head over to Zig Zag Oyster Bar, Prospect Heights’ newest hotspot for fresh seafood, cocktails, and late summer vibes.

Co-owner Nialls Fallon says the team hopes to bring the same warm, generous and welcoming service that locals have come to expect at their other restaurants, along with thoughtful, simple and delicious food, wine and cocktails at a good value. The menu will feature all types of raw and chilled seafood plus the seasonal vegetable dishes they have become known for.

Fallon, who is based in lower Manhattan near Zig Zag’s sister spots Cervo’s and Eel Bar, says that the team focuses on opening restaurants in the communities close to where they live. Co-owners Nick and Leah live in Brooklyn, and Zig Zag will open in the space formerly occupied by Bar Meridian, which was special to all three of them. “We’re good friends with the former owner of Bar Meridian,” Fallon says. “We’re excited about taking over the space of such a beloved bar and continuing to have a fun and vibrant spot.”

As for some of their favorite local spots in the neighborhood, Fallon shares that they frequent Nacho Macho Taco and that Radio Bakery is a favorite for lunch. They also love Kissa Kissa for a fun jazz wine bar, Bong for incredible Cambodian food and Crabby Shack for seafood.

Hot tip: customers who are dairy free will find an abundance of options at Zig Zag. Though the bar will have dairy on the menu, Nick has a life threatening dairy allergy, so all of their restaurants lean toward olive oil for dairy free cooking. “Keeps our food lighter,” Fallon shares. “Feels great and tastes great!

• Indian restaurant Badshah, by Chef Abishek Sharma of the popular Manhattan restaurants Madam Ji and Swagat, has opened at 212 Flatbush Avenue between Dean and Bergen Streets.

• Love & Honey Fried Chicken will open Friday, July 24th, at 229 Flatbush Avenue between Dean and Bergen Streets, marking the Philly-based restaurant’s first NYC location. The restaurant is known for its brined, hand-dredged, buttermilk-fried chicken.

Closing

• 5th Avenue Record Shop, Brooklyn’s oldest record store, has closed its doors after nearly six decades in the neighborhood. The store was founded in 1966 by Tony Mignone and moved to its location on 5th Avenue between 8th and 9th in 1972. They will be missed!

• The Red Hook Pool has re-opened three weeks after it closed temporarily due to a mechanical issue.

• The Brooklyn Navy Yard unveils its 2026 public art gallery which features three new art installations and spans 350 feet along its exterior fence. Entitled “Build the Future, Brooklyn: Layered Lenses and Brooklyn Becomes”, the installations feature work from local professional artists, graduate students and high school students. Check them out through early November.

• Opening a small business in NYC could soon get easier - the city has announced more than 50 proposed reforms aimed at cutting red tape and reducing unnecessary fines. The plans include dedicated case managers for new business owners, streamlined requirements for barbershops and childcare providers and the elimination of some outdated restaurant permits.

• Some good news— Richard Nixon, the popular neighborhood cat who went missing from his home on Sterling Place weeks ago, has been returned to his owner.

Meet Josh & Tracy of Kings Co Imperial, Opening July 27

Josh Grinker and Tracy Jane Young, the team behind the popular Chinese-American restaurant Kings Co Imperial opening in Park Slope this month, celebrate their “homecoming” to the neighborhood and chat about how the community has played such an important role in their journey.

Kings Co Imperial, a neighborhood staple in Williamsburg for over a decade, will celebrate their highly-anticipated opening in Park Slope on July 27th. Though this is the restaurant’s first location in the neighborhood, owners Josh Grinker and Tracy Jane Young are no strangers to Park Slope. In 2004, they founded local favorite Stone Park Cafe. Now, over two decades later, they return to the neighborhood, opening their new outpost just next door on 3rd Street.

“Park Slope has changed a lot over the years, but the one thing that hasn’t changed is that the people who live here are fiercely community oriented,” Josh says. “Young families are obviously a big part of what makes Park Slope so cohesive and we think that Kings Co will be perfect for that environment.” Their hope is that the new restaurant becomes the type of place that fits naturally into Park Slopers’ routines, whether it’s for a weekday lunch, a casual dinner with friends, takeout, or a celebration.

“We have a lot of history in Park Slope since opening Stone Park Cafe, more than 20 years ago, so returning to the neighborhood with Kings Co Imperial feels like a homecoming. It’s exciting to be back and once again be part of the community that played such an important role in our story.” -Tracy Jane Young

In addition to the classic dishes served at the Williamsburg and Lower East Side locations, Park Slopers can look forward to new menu items, including Sichuan Crispy Duck and Beef Fan Fan Dumplings (gluten-free). The restaurant will also be returning to some of the original dishes they opened with in Williamsburg that have since been replaced, like the Weeping Tiger Salad with dried baby shrimp and Stir Fried 5 Pepper Shortrib with Tofu. A brand new lunch program will also be rolling out in September.

Some of Josh & Tracy’s frequently visited spots in the neighborhood include Simple Loaf Bakehouse, which Josh believes has “some of the best sourdough in the city,” and Leopoldi Hardware, which he has visited since he was a kid in the 80s. Just like these tried-and-true favorites, the pair hopes that Kings Co Imperial will become a neighborhood spot that locals can depend on. “There’s something really special about becoming a restaurant guests return to again and again,” Tracy says. “That’s what we’re striving for in Park Slope.”

Openings

• Flamingo Baby Brunch & Bar, the relaunch of the popular Southern Caribbean Fusion restaurant formerly on Union Street, will soft-open this Saturday, July 18th, at 348 Douglass Street at the corner of 4th Ave. They will operate like a cafe Mon-Thurs, serving pastries, coffee, tea, and a light bites menu with some brunch items available. Full brunch will be served Fri-Sunday.

On Tap: A Talk with Patrick Watson of Hidden Rivers

With twelve rotating taps from independent east coast breweries, beer cocktails, and a gorgeous back garden, the newly opened Hidden Rivers in Gowanus is a beer drinker’s dream. Patrick Watson, who co-owns the bar along with wife Michele Pravda, filled us in on what’s brewing with the buzzy new spot.

Hidden Rivers just opened last month, but the idea behind it is anything but new. When Michele and Patrick’s friend-turned-business-partner, Dhruv Mohindra, purchased the building around 8 years ago, some friends got together to crack a beer in the space to congratulate him. “At the time we joked about opening a bar there because the garden space is so special,” Patrick said. “Fast forward, here we are today. We felt the timing and need for a local and great beer bar in this area was now.”

Patrick and Michelle own the popular Brooklyn wine shop Smith & Vine and founded the now-closed Cobble Hill bar The JakeWalk and cheese & specialty food shop Stinky Bklyn. Aside from an extensive selection of local beers, the Hidden Rivers menu also features speciality cocktails, wines by the glass & snacks. Stinky Bklyn fans will be happy to know they have brought back their signature Stinky Pimento spread— as featured in the Ina Garten show— on the Hidden Rivers menu!

Patrick and Michelle love investing in the community and supporting neighboring businesses, especially their neighbors Liar Liar. “Coming from a background of wine, we feel they have one of the best wine programs in the area,” Patrick said. They also frequent Claireware Pottery and Royal Palms.

Their hope is that Hidden Rivers becomes a dependable neighborhood bar with the greatest tasting tap beer in the area, not to mention one of the only proper imperial pours of Guinness. We’ll cheers to that!

• After closing the Flamingo Baby Kitchen space on Union Street in May, Flamingo Baby Brunch & Bar will open in their new location at 348 Douglass St (corner of 4th Ave) on Saturday July 18th.

• Did you know that a Windsor Terrace parent wrote the FIFA World Cup official theme? We love to see our neighbors doing great things! Huge congrats to composer & producer Zach Golden!

• The winners of Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest defended their titles last weekend despite battling 100 degree heat. Joey Chestnut, 18-time champion, ate an impressive 66 hot dogs while 12-time winner Miki Sudo wolfed down 38.7.

• Red Hook Pool, which is one of five Olympic-sized pools in Brooklyn, is currently shut down due to mechanical issues. Last year, the swimming spot delayed its seasonal opening due similar mechanical issues.

• Two Historic Crew Ships Sink in Red Hook: Nick Bello reported that Victory Chimes, a historic schooner connected to hospitality company Crew, sank in Red Hook just days after the historic Pilot went down. The cause of both incidents remains under investigation. Crew, the company behind Fireboat at Brooklyn Bridge Park, Montero’s Bar & Grill on Atlantic Avenue, and the former floating restaurant Pilot, describes its mission this way: “We create, restore, and operate places in and around the water. We preserve old ships and buildings, and bring forgotten waterfronts back to life.” The company is now focused on understanding what happened and safely raising the Pilot.

It’s impossible to rank the top diners in New York City and I firmly believe that the best diner is the one that is closest to you. But in a city where diners are becoming a rare breed, Park Slope stands out as Brooklyn’s best neighborhood for diners. With nearly a dozen options — serving classic diner fair to Mexican and Greek-inspired dishes — there’s a joint for everyone.

Diners mean different things to different people, but I think a few things have to be true to be a diner: all-day breakfast, unlimited black coffee, and a menu so big I can flip through it like a story book. Some are still open 24-hours, many have tightly-packed booth seating, and you can still get a fairly affordable meal in an increasingly expensive city. I want to be able to order an omelet, a plate of pasta, and a burrito all at the same time if I want to.

But perhaps more importantly, diners are community foundations. A place where you can run into friends and chat with the staff. A place where everyone is welcome. Nick Kolosakas, owner of Park Slope’s Little Purity likens his diner to the local watering hole. “This is basically my living room and people come here to hang out,” he told me recently while I sat at the counter. “People that come here all the time now know each other. I’ve created so many bridges with people.”

Diners are a dying breed so we’re particularly lucky that in Park Slope, we still have a lot of options to choose from. When I chatted with Riley Arthur of @DinersofNYC, she said New York diners face a lot of challenges in staying open. “Gentrification, aging owners, changing tastes, and shrinking profit margins can all contribute to a diner closing,” she said. “A large number of closings in recent years aren’t because a business wasn’t successful, but because of an increase in costs.”

New York City is constantly changing, and it can feel like a losing battle trying to save your favorite restaurants. Usually, the best thing you can do is to go there to eat and spend money. Pay a visit to your favorite diner this weekend and to help keep these neighborhood watering holes open forever.

Windsor Diner

The lone diner on Prospect Park West, locals say they “don’t skimp on portions” and love the eggs Benedict.

Purity Diner

Purity Diner has been serving Park Slope locals and nearby hospital workers for nearly 100 years. People really love the French toast, friendly staff, and New York memorabilia.

7th Ave Donuts & Diner

A rare diner that’s open 24hrs a day, this spot also churns out a big selection of fresh donuts all day and serves curly fries! “The Platonic ideal of an NYC diner.”

Little Purity
390 7th Ave

All diners in Park Slope are packed on the weekend, but in my biased opinion, Little Purty is the hottest ticket in town. They excel at diner classics, but have an eclectic menu of sandwiches and burgers, and have excellent house-made salsa and jam.

Grand Canyon Diner
179 7th Ave

Serving the neighborhood since 1986, head here for Mexican breakfast classics like chilaquiles (I am partial to verde), breakfast burritos, and huevos rancheros. The team that runs Grand Canyon also runs Terrace Restaurant and a few spots just out of the neighborhood.

A diner with great drink specials, you can expect excellent Mexican options (like their mole enchiladas) plus highly-rated chicken and waffles. Get the huevos rancheros topped with chorizo to make it “so good it should be illegal.”

Fifth Ave Diner

Another long-standing neighborhood joint, Fifth Ave Diner is known for their diner classics and Greek specialities. They have a real old school vibe and people seem to like their milkshakes.

On the border with Gowanus, Union St Cafe is cash only and prices offer an insane bang for your buck. The corned beef hash is highly-rated and the vibe is very non-touristy (in the best way).

Dizzy’s Diner

A beloved Park Slope eatery, Dizzy’s closed its doors in October 2020 after a 22-year run at the corner of 9th St & 8th Ave. The spot served as a local hub where neighbors gathered throughout the day.

Local News 🗞️

• After almost 40 years in Park Slope, Puppetworks has found its new home in Industry City.

• Brooklyn’s Independence Day Parade, NYC’s oldest Independence Day Parade, celebrated 119 years last Sunday in Park Slope. Originally held on July 4th, organizers shifted the parade to the weekend prior to the holiday in recent years.

• The Department of Justice has opened a probe into local coffee chain Poetica Coffee after it banned Representative Dan Goldman for his pro-Israel stance.

In March 2025, health issues landed me on a restrictive medical diet that wholly excluded gluten. As someone who drools over the mere thought of a pain au chocolat or a wood-fired pizza, I thought my life was turning from technicolor to a monotonous gray. Little did I know the delights that awaited me, filling the shops and eateries that lined the sidewalks of my new community.

One year and a more healed gut later, I have been blessed with the ability to dabble in gluten again from time to time. Straddling the line between gluten tolerance and intolerance has given me a helpful perspective: I know when a gluten-free substitute tastes like the real thing (or close enough), and I know what dishes are so downright delicious I reach for them no matter what. In no particular order, here are my top ten favorite gluten-free eats in Park Slope.

1. The Jalapeño Feta-Dill Scone from WINNER - dill adds the perfect brightness to briny feta and the savory, not-too-dense scone. Much more than a gluten-free alternative to the famous bakery’s floury offerings, I find this scone to be one of the best items on Winner’s menu.

   

2. Omakase at Sushi Katsuei - though I find the fish at Sushi Katsuei so fresh and flavorful it barely needs adornment, they offer a house-made gluten-free soy sauce, and can accommodate an entire gluten-free omakase menu. Yes, please.

   

3. The gluten-free “Patata” pizza from Ottava - Ottava hits the mark on several fronts: great pizza, great Italian-inspired drinks, and ideal al fresco sidewalk dining. They also offer two gluten-free crust options for their pies: one made from cauliflower, and the other from almond flour. Both work well as the base for their “Patata” pizza, a white pizza featuring guanciale, gremolata, and of course, thinly-sliced potatoes. Perfection.

   

4. The Greens Sandwich from Lively - this small-but-mighty sandwich, packed with springy greens and hummus and served on gluten-free bread, is like a snack plate you can hold in your hands. Satisfying and delicious, it won’t leave you feeling shortchanged at lunch time.

   

5. The “Jump Start” on a gluten-free bagel from Bagel Pub 7th Ave - egg whites, avocado, and turkey bacon are just a few of the layers in this perfect weekend breakfast sandwich. There is only one variety of gluten-free bagel offered at Bagel Pub (plain), but I find it to be the best option in the neighborhood for the Celiac* set. It hits the spot.

   

6. The gluten-free bar bites at Folk - the first time I agreed to meet friends for dinner at Folk, I figured I’d revel in the cocktail bar’s beverage program and see if I could nibble on any vegetable side dish before making my own meal at home. Much to my delighted surprise, Folk’s menu offers a range of clearly-marked gluten-free items that are both substantial and delicious. My favorites are the biryani arancini, the lamb meatballs, and the crab risotto. If you feel like making it a full supper, the fish and chips is just the right balance of crispy and tender – and still gluten-free.

7. The Brown Butter Corn Cake from Radio Bakery - technically, Radio Bakery is one neighborhood over in Prospect Heights, but this corn cake makes the list because it is worth the extra walking. I always grabbed one on trips to the bakery when it first opened on Underhill Avenue (and I was still eating gluten regularly), and only gleefully learned several months later that I could continue doing so while gluten-free. It’s just that good.

   

8. The Massaman Curry from One More Charm - creamy, comforting curry with a hint of sweetness. I’d order it over and over even if I could digest all the gluten in the world. It can also be made as a vegetarian dish.

   

9. The Avgolemono from Athena Mediterranean Cuisine - on winter nights and rainy days, I reach for a bowl of avgolemono, a lemony chicken soup over rice, from Athena on 6th Ave. Salty, silky broth made with eggs and lemon juice lends just the right amount of punch to this classic comfort dish. Another staple I eat regardless of restrictions.

10. The Butter Chicken from Pangat - on my first trip to Pangat on 5th Avenue, my server encouraged me to order the butter chicken – “it’s different from the usual version,” she said. She was right. It was so much better than any butter chicken I’d ever had. Try it for your gluten-free self (and thank me later).

Grimm Tavern is opening tomorrow, Friday June 26th, at 659 Vanderbilt Ave (Between Prospect Pl & Park Pl), in the space previously occupied by Olmsted. From Grimm Artisanal Ales - named New York State Brewery of the Year five times (most recently in 2025 and 2026) - owners Joe and Lauren Grimm, the restaurant will serve dry-aged steaks and burgers, tallow fries, roast chicken, and pan-fried trout and feature a full bar.

When I first moved to New York, I couldn’t wait to live at the epicenter of gay history, picturing the iconic Manhattan sites of the Stonewall Inn and Christopher Street Piers. What I didn’t know was that by moving into an apartment in South Slope, I would be living steps from one of the largest and oldest collections about, by, and for lesbians in the entire world.

At first glance, the Lesbian Herstory Archives, located in a 1908 limestone townhouse on 14th street, looks like any other Park Slope family home, its identity only denoted by a small rainbow flag on its door and lesbian-flag-colored pots of lavender perched outside.

Park Slope became known by the moniker “Dyke Slope” during the area’s early waves of gentrification in the 1980s, when lesbians flocked from Manhattan to the more affordable, Hispanic-populated Brooklyn neighborhood. The Lesbian Herstory Archives officially opened its doors here in 1993. Its newsletter noted that “a large concentration of NY dykes live within walking distance” of its new home.

The Archives were originally founded by members of the Gay Academic Union in the 1970s, out of the urgent sense that, as co-founder Deborah Edel put it, “Our history was disappearing as quickly as we were making it.” Initially operating out of the Upper West Side home of the legendary Jewish writer Joan Nestle, its growing materials soon demanded a larger space.

The collections’ permanent home in Park Slope was purchased for $163,000 after years of community fundraising drives; it was, and still is, run entirely by volunteers, who “painted and plastered” the building by hand. The name Lesbian Herstory Archives was both intentionally serious in its stipulation of preserving lesbian history specifically, rather than chronicling broader feminist or queer experiences, but also tongue-in-cheek, with Deborah Edel describing the use of “Herstory” over History as a choice “to prove we had a sense of humor”.

I stepped into the Archives’ townhouse for the first time this Pride Month. It felt like visiting the home of your lesbian great-aunt who has a hoarding problem — fetchingly chaotic and exceedingly cool. Piles of boxes are stacked high and haphazardly around its parlor fireplace; volunteers of all ages giggle and kvetch around a large dining table; to get to the gender neutral bathroom, you walk past iconic lesbian leather and denim jackets hanging in the hallway.

There are regular and free open hours for visitors, with no institutional affiliation needed. Some visitors are academics or authors who use the collections for research, whereas others are simply interested community members, hailing from near and far (a recent Google review reads: “The archive wasn’t open to the public on the day I visited but the lovely volunteers took pity on me being from Australia and let me in anyway”.)

The Archives has an expansive definition of what constitutes lesbian history, welcoming everything from personal journals to slogan buttons to erotic periodicals. Visitors are invited to rifle through the materials by hand unsupervised, simply told to use “lesbian outcards” to ensure they return materials to their correct spot.

The site departs from institutional archival traditions in its filing systems. Historian and former Archives coordinator Rachel Corbman explains that “the decision to file material alphabetically by first name” challenges the convention of identifying women by male-inherited surnames, while also protecting the privacy of lesbians who only wanted to be known by their first name. Rachel also notes the “pivotal” decision in 1979 to create “special collections”, which keep materials donated by individuals or organizations grouped together. The Archives’ success lies in its ongoing power to keep lesbian history alive; it is fitting that they organize these collections by the person who donated them, rather than slicing up a life’s items into subsections of genre or form.

The Lesbian Herstory Archives are beloved by many in the community. Jack Jen Gieseking, author of A Queer New York, describes it as “a constant, bright star… a set of rooms of one’s own that all dykes are welcome to share”. The site is not reserved exclusively for research, but also hosts film screenings, group Wikipedia edit-a-thon sessions, and an annual Dyke Prom. The volunteer-team are also continuing to digitize materials to expand their reach, from thousands of oral herstory cassettes to a searchable online t-shirt catalog.

And the influence of the Archives’ politics extends beyond the confines of its space. This April, Mayor Zohran Mamdani appointed former Archives’ coordinator Shawn(ta) Smith-Cruz as “chief keeper of the city’s records”; Shawn(ta)’s approach to preserving New York City’s history and responding to ongoing public information requests will no doubt be informed by her twenty-year tenure at the Archives.

The word archives can conjure up images of dusty historical relics, sitting staid and preserved. Special Collections Coordinator Olivia Newsome told me that the team running it are “more interested in thinking about ways this can be a living archive in a living space”, where collections are “activated” for today. Olivia feels a sense of relief when transferring personal papers from lesbian elders into the collections; she recently worked with Dr. Wilhelmina Perry to do so, an LGBTQ interfaith community leader now in her nineties. As Olivia put it, archiving the history of lesbians like Dr. Perry shows that “we will always be faced with something, and we’ve always survived it.”

Whether Dyke Slope is a historical or current phenomenon depends on who you ask. Jack Jen Gieseking’s queer history of New York argues that the “markers” of lesbian communities who moved to Park Slope, bringing co-ops, feminist bookstores, and yoga studios, ironically created the attractive cultural conditions that priced out some of its residents: “Where lesbian clogs, boots, and heels tread, price hikes soon followed.” The Archives, too, is somewhat victim to its own success; its three-floor home can no longer fit the majority of its collections on-site.

In a newsletter announcing the Archives’ move to Park Slope over thirty-years ago, co-founder Joan Nestle described the experience of living amongst its holdings: “I have heard voices thick with desire, voices cracked by time or social sanctions, but in my home, the home of the Lesbian Herstory Archives, they all spoke, all at once, the past and the present, the old and the new.” As long as the Archives are in Park Slope, our neighborhood will always be a distinctive home for the lesbian community; all of us are lucky to share in its past and its present, too.
