How did you come up with the name Poetica for your business?
My both grandfathers were poets back in Uzbekistan. We have schools and streets named after them and growing up I was around poetry quite often. It fascinates me how one can play with words and come up with a poem that touches deep in peoples’ souls.
I was in lock down and didn’t leave the house last year since my wife was pregnant and we did not want to take any risks. One night after watching maybe 10 million Netflix shows and after couple of beers I thought of coffee. Same way when words play in harmony and become a good poem.
Coffee is also some sort of poetry, it is planted some where far away from New York. Harvested, shipped, roasted, packaged shipped again - then at the coffee shop it is grounded with a milk that has its own voyage to that moment is steamed to the perfect temperature and finally it is inside your cup. In a local coffee shop with a familiar faces, you take your coffee and go on your own journey.
A perfect poetry of coffee and people.
The Prospect Park West location is a great addition to the neighborhood. How did you decide to choose that location?
I live in Windsor Terrace and I pass by Prospect Park West everyday and at the time we already had our son and when I was strolling one day with him I thought we should do it before it becomes another Starbucks. ;)
Do you have any favorite Park Slope businesses?
My favorite business in Park Slope is Terre Italian restaurant on 5th Ave.
The growth of your business has been so quick - 5 stores in a year across Brooklyn! Are you able to share how you were able to grow so quickly?
When the pandemic hit I lost everything - all the businesses (dry cleaning and commercial laundry business) - and it was scary since we were having a baby. I guess that fear of not being able to provide was main engine.
But this wasn’t the plan in the beginning. I just wanted to have one and have some food on the table. Our team as small as it was gave me confidence that we can grow and rent places that otherwise would not be for rent.
And so we did. Thus far we have been lucky with enormous support of our neighbors.
