Ice Cakes Not People is a grassroots community bake sale led by bakers across 23 cities. Alex LaRosa of Alex LaRosa Bakery and Clio Goodman, owner of ByClio, wanted to bring the event to Brooklyn to show solidarity for our immigrant neighbors during this time of high need and concern. Read more about the nationwide event here.
All proceeds from the March 8 event go directly to the organization Make the Road New York. Make the Road offers legal services, education programs, community organizing, and policy advocacy.
Forty-five bakers donated to the event, which took place at ByClio’s bakery in Gowanus: cakes, cookies, cupcakes, muffins, even dog treats!
In addition, Alex and Clio gathered raffle donations from local businesses to increase proceeds.
The raffle even included cake art, donated by Heather Rios.
The event took place from 12-4. From the start, Alex, Clio, ByClio staff, and a group of volunteers managed large crowds that swirled up Third Avenue for the entire four hour event.
By the end of day, the community fundraiser raised thousands of dollars. Stay tuned on Instagram handles @alexlarosa and @byclionyc for more updates!
