Making Composting Easy: 3 Smart Products to Simplify Food Waste
These composting solutions fit every kitchen and household
As of April this year, composting is officially mandatory in NYC. If you're new to separating food waste - or just looking to streamline your system - here are 3 great products that make it easier, no matter your household size or kitchen setup.
These solutions are ranked by how much space they take up (which also correlates with price!). From food recyclers to countertop bins, there's something for every home.

1. Mill Food Recycler
Best for larger kitchens with extra floor space
Mill is a food recycler designed to reduce household food waste by drying and grinding scraps into a more compact material. It’s relatively odor-free, hands-off and doesn’t require frequent emptying, making it a convenient option for those who prefer a low-maintenance setup.
Capacity: 6.5 Liters / 1.7 gallons
Dimensions: 13.8” D x 16.6” W x 27.2” H (37.5” with lid open)
Estimated emptying frequency: ~Once per month for 2-person households
Price: $999 (also available to rent for $35/month)
The end-product from food recyclers like Mill is not traditional compost. It's a dehydrated material that retains nutrients and can be used as part of a composting process; Mill refers to it as “nutrient-rich grounds”.
2. Lomi 2 - Food Recycler
Best for households with countertop space
Lomi 2 is a smaller, countertop appliance that processes organic waste into a fertilizer-like output in just a few hours. It uses a combination of heat, aeration, and grinding. While convenient and relatively odor-free, the output may not have the full benefits of traditional compost.
Capacity: 3 Liters / 0.79 gallons
Dimensions: 13" D x 16" W x 12” H
Estimated emptying frequency: ~Once per week for 2-person households
Price:
$599$359 (currently discounted by $240 - thanks to the “Tariff Sale”)Like the Mill, Lomi’s processed material is not traditional compost. It's a dehydrated material that retains nutrients and can be used as part of a composting process.
3. OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin
Best for small kitchens or minimal counter space
OXO’s Good Groups Easy-Clean Compost Bin is a compact, no-frills compost bin that acts as a temporary storage container for your food scraps. It’s ideal if you use curbside pickup or don’t mind the frequency of transferring your scraps to a larger outdoor bin.
The lid is also designed to minimize odors without a filter, however, it is not dishwasher-safe. There is a slightly higher priced and larger model that is dish-washer safe.
Capacity: 2.83 Liters / 0.75 gallons
Dimensions: 6.6” D x 6.4” W x 7.5” H
Estimated emptying frequency: ~Every 2–3 days for 2-person households
Price: $22.99
Note: This is not a composter or food recycler, and is used for collection.
