Welcome to Park Slope’s weekly newsletter, Park Slope Pulse. We spend hours curating the most important news and events each week ✨ for free ✨ to save you time sifting through listings and articles, and you’ll get to know more about a fellow neighbor! Park Slope Pulse gives you the first insights to make plans or start conversations.
Here’s what’s happening this week:
NYC Restaurant Week continues through Aug 18— check out these delicious brunch, lunch, & dinner deals from participating Park Slope Restaurants (we link you directly to the menus!): Stone Park Cafe, Palo Santo, Chela, The Dram Shop, Convivium Osteria, Lore, Fonda, Mikhuy Peruvian Restaurant, Parklife, Alta Calidad, Tiny’s Cantina and Morgan's Brooklyn BBQ
Neighborhood venue The Bell House is now run by Live Nation [Brooklyn Paper]: “Opened in a former Gowanus printing press warehouse in 2008, the Bell House was previously independently owned and known for showcasing a range of comedians and storytellers, with many getting their initial break at the venue.”
Unapproved dining sheds in NYC to come down by this weekend: “The new program includes two options. Roadway dining—those sheds in the middle of the street that have become part and parcel of the city’s urban layout—will be a seasonal endeavor between April 1 and November 29 yearly. Sidewalk cafes, on the other hand, will be permitted all year round." [Time Out New York]
Prospect Park Alliance recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new Adult Fitness Area and Harmony Playground improvements in Prospect Park! The fitness area offers equipment that is accessible for all ability levels, and the playground has a new shaded sandbox structure! You can find the playgound & fitness area near Prospect Park West between 10th & 11th streets.
Park Slope based non-profit organization Camp Friendship is holding their annual School Supply Drive through August 25th. They are accepting new donations of backpacks, pencils, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, and other items, with drop off locations available throughout the neighborhood.
Openings: Hungry Ghost Coffee will be opening soon on 5th Ave and 4th Street. Plus, is the large sign on 5th Ave and 2nd Street (at the old Benchmark Restaurant location) a hint that there will be a new taco joint in the neighborhood soon? We’ll keep you updated!

Meet The Editor: Mychal Phillips
I’m excited for you to meet Mychal Phillips, Park Slope Pulse’s Editor and a Park Slope resident. She shares her story, the many roles she juggles during the week, and some of her favorite things about the neighborhood! I’m so happy she has joined the Park Slope Living team and grateful for her valuable contribution to this neighborhood publication. - Viv
I love the feeling of community! It’s the first place I’ve lived where I know all of my neighbors. My favorite day of the year in Park Slope is Halloween, when we sit on our stoop and hand out candy to all the cute kiddos in the neighborhood!
Tell us about yourself (the many things you do outside of Park Slope Pulse, fun facts or thoughts you’d like to share with the community!)
I’m originally from NC, but I’ve lived in NYC since 2005. It’s felt like home since the day I moved here! Performing and traveling are my two greatest loves, and I’m lucky that my job allows me to combine the two. I’ve performed in theaters across the country and in China and Singapore. I’m also a student! During the pandemic, I completed my undergrad, and now I’m earning my Masters in Marketing.
When did you move to Park Slope and how did you decide to live here?
When my partner, Mario, and I lived uptown, we would take the hour-long train ride down to walk along 5th Ave and eat at Bogota. We loved it! We finally moved to the neighborhood in 2020 and are relieved that it takes much less time to get to our favorite spots!
What are some of the things you love about the neighborhood?
I love the feeling of community! It’s the first place I’ve lived where I know all of my neighbors. And there is never a shortage of new places to go and things to try! I’ve followed @parkslopeliving for years and love checking out all of Viv’s recommendations. My favorite day of the year in Park Slope is Halloween, when we sit on our stoop and hand out candy to all the cute kiddos in the neighborhood!
What are some local businesses you love?
Too many to list! @bogotabistro, @bagelpub, @anniesblueribbongeneralstore, @lore.brooklyn, @purebarrenyc, and @waltersbk and @olea_mediterranean_taverna in Fort Greene.
