Q & A with Leah Shahmiri, owner of Shahmiri
Shahmiri, Park Slope’s newest apparel, accessories, & home boutique, opened on August 14th. We were excited to chat with Leah about her vision for the shop and her love of the Park Slope community. Stop by Shahmiri on 8th Ave between 11th and 12th streets and give them a warm welcome to the neighborhood!
What is the inspiration behind Shahmiri?
The desire for simply luxurious and enduring pieces to wear, live with, and use. I am inspired by a classic but eclectic sensibility present in Rhode Island, where I am from, and Los Angeles, where I've lived. Taking hints from Europe, Japan, and South America too. The store was born from a mix of relationships and research, and very careful curation. I hope it becomes a destination for new discoveries and classic standbys that can't be sourced elsewhere.
How did you come to choose your location in Park Slope? What do you like about the neighborhood?
Park Slope - and particularly this southern stretch - have felt like a second home (I live a few neighborhoods away) for years as my twin sister Audrey lived here for a long time, I’m a co-op member, loyally patronize Winner and other local spots, visit the park, etc. I love looking out onto the leafy, vibrant street and am incredibly grateful to be welcomed into this community.
What is your vision for Shahmiri?
For the store to embody the warmth, elegance, function, and edge that I have in mind. The offering will continue to expand and evolve, but being extremely thoughtful about the lines featured will remain super important.
What are some products you’re really excited about right now?
That’s hard! Our collection of handblown glass bowls, platters, and vases by LA artist Kazuki Takizawa. They are luminous and special with rich and gemlike color. They are called ‘shizuku’ or droplet in Japanese after their sinuous, water-like form. I’m excited about Emilly Brooke Rubin’s exclusive and masterfully made collection of refined, bohemian jewelry. She is based on Nantucket and known for her sumptuous pieces dripping with leather, ocean pearls, and rare stones.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with the Park Slope community?
My deep appreciation for the introductions, check ins, words of encouragement… the biggest pleasure has been getting to know neighbors, longtime residents, the lineage of this space, and enter the fold of this close-knit group. The familiar faces are the highlight of my day, and it’s been that way since I got the keys to this space in May. Thank you!
