Here’s what’s happening this week:
Openings- Hungry Ghost Coffee opened its newest location at 337 5th Avenue between 3rd & 4th streets last week. Red Hook’s non-profit cultural arts center Pioneer Works re-opens on September 6th after a completing a large renovation project.
Some neighborhood cafes are impacted by NYC’s latest outdoor dining rules. The city’s new program required restaurants to submit an application and pay a fee by August 3rd in order to keep their outdoor eating areas. The changes have forced some local restaurants, like Cafe Regular on Berkeley Place, to remove sidewalk tables and chairs, sometimes resulting in a loss of business. [The New York Times].
A re-zoning proposal at the Arrow Linen site in South Slope has been met with opposition by community members. The laundry company’s re-zoning application, which includes a plan to build two 13-story residential buildings comprised mostly of units at market rate, was certified by the City Planning Commission in June. A community board meeting and public hearing is scheduled on September 9th. [Brownstoner].

Back-To- School Buys with Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store
Whether you’re mourning the loss of summer or anxiously awaiting sweater season, this curated list of Back-To-School items from Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store owner Ann Cantrell and her team is guaranteed to get you excited about the school year. Swing by their store on 5th Avenue between President & Carroll Streets or visit their website to check out their full collection!
STATE Kane Kids Double Pocket Backpack in Gingham
First up, our backpacks from State. They are durable (my daughter has had hers for years), stylish (many styles have already sold out!), and also give back. With every STATE purchase, they support American children and families in need in the ways they need it most, from donating fully-packed backpacks at bag drop rallies to funding special projects that support partner schools and organizations.
Yumbox Panino 4 Compartment Lunchbox in Luna Aqua Zodiac
We love Yumboxes (again, my daughter has had hers for YEARS- since PreK & is still using one now going into 8th grade)! We have 4 & 6 compartment styles. 4 compartments hold a sandwich or a bagel & other goodies, but some kids like more variety or aren’t sandwich eaters, so that style is super easy to pack. Yumbox has lots of inspiring images on their feed too if you want lunchbox ideas!
Great for taking notes and highlighting!
Sooo fun to include a little note to your kiddo for them to see at lunch. We’ve got a couple varieties of lunchbox notes— this one is jokes!
A cool & fun new water bottle to complete the package! We love S’well because they also give back. A few years ago, S’well donated a water bottle for every kid in NYC Public Schools, to help divert single use plastic bottles from the trash & teach kids about recycling.
One last bonus item: a family calendar to keep everything organized! Getting everyone’s schedules figured out is one of the most daunting parts of going back to school but getting the right systems in place really helps.
Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store is partnering with Park Slope Pulse for a special Back-To-School giveaway. The lucky winner will receive a STATE backpack and Yumbox! Check out today’s post on @parkslopeliving for more details.
